Handmade Card Making Basics: Where to Start (And What's Next)

🎨 Step 1: Background Panel
The purpose of the background is to provide a landing pad for the focal point and sentiments. It should add interest, but I prefer my backgrounds to play a supporting role, allowing the focal image and often the sentiment to be the leading characters.
- Stamping or Stenciling: Play with patterns and colours—like fancy doodling.
- Ink Blending: Beautiful gradients or just a hint of colour. The perfect way to ground your focal images.
- Die-Cut Shapes: Add texture, cool designs and even bold text for extra dimension.
- Patterned Cardstock: Choose a cute design when you're short on time or need that simple landing pad for your amazing focal point. Shop for premium patterned cardstock!

- Keep It Simple: Don't be afraid to leave your background unadorned. White space highlights your focal point beautifully. Sometimes your focal images need to breathe!
🌟 Step 2: Spotlight on the Focal Image
The focal point of a handmade greeting card is like the heart of your design—it draws the viewer's attention and sets the emotional tone. While focal points are often objects or images, don't underestimate the impact of a well-placed word die-cut. I use a variety of techniques for my focal points, but the mood of my card always guides my choice.
- Stamped & Die-Cut Images: Feature critters, flowers, or favourites.
- Stamped on Die-Cuts: Stamp directly on die-cut shapes (ovals, circles) for a classy frame.

Die Cut Sentiments: When word dies are stacked for dimension and placed on a super fun background, these can be an amazing focal point.
- Die-Cuts Layered & Assembled: Layer flowers, leaves, or fun shapes for a lot of interest and dimension.

✍️ Step 3: Say It with Style (The Sentiment)
The sentiment on your card front is the main message or greeting for your handmade card. It completes the craftsmanship of your piece of mini-art. Sometimes the sentiment is the focal point or it is a supporting element. Either way, it is the glue that cements the intent of the card.
- Word Dies: Add amazing dimension; perfect for large main sentiments

- Sentiment Strips: Clean, modern stamped messages on cardstock strips. These can be done in various sizes, so there are lots of options. Perfect for the main message or a sub-sentiment.
- Pre-Printed Strips: Quick, no-stamp needed option, just a strip die or a small guillotine! Easy peasy, lemon squeezey.
- Direct Stamping: You can also stamp your sentiment directly on the card—just plan ahead and leave some space.
✏️ Step 4: The Finishing Touch (The Note Card)
The notecard is the base of your handmade card—a piece of cardstock cut to size and folded. My preference? 100 to 120 lb cover weight cardstock. The difference is immediately noticeable; it feels substantial, luxurious, and unmistakably premium in the hand. Your notecard is the foundation that brings all your creative elements together.
- Pick Your Cardstock: For colour, select white, ivory, or a shade that echoes your card design. For weight, opt for a heavier weight cardstock.
- Orientation: Portrait, landscape, top fold, or side fold—choose what fits your design.
- Adorn the Inside: If your notecard is a dark tone, line the inside with a light coloured panel about 1/4" smaller than the notecard. This will provide the perfect backdrop to write your heartfelt message in regular pen.

- Add a Stamped Sentiment: Include meaningful quotes or messages.
- Keep It Blank: For heartfelt, handwritten notes.
