Hello all!
Soon the Christmas and holiday season will be upon us. So much to do and so little time. I know, it's been the same date as every year, but it seems like it just gets here earlier and earlier every year. Whether you're a Christmas enthusiast (guilty as charged) or a last-minute shopper, this blog post is here to help you get ready for the most wonderful time of the year. So grab a cup of hot cocoa, put on your favourite ugly Christmas sweater, and let's dive into some festive tips and tricks!
1. Deck the Halls (and Everything Else!)
One of the best parts of Christmas is decorating your home. Get creative and go all out with twinkling lights, colourful ornaments, and a tree that would make Santa himself jealous. Don't forget to hang mistletoe strategically for those unexpected holiday smooches!
2. Make a List (and Check it Twice!)
Santa isn't the only one who needs a list. Make a list of all the people you want to buy gifts for and jot down some ideas. Pro tip: start early to avoid the stress of last-minute shopping. Don't forget to shop local if you can and support those smaller businesses in person and on-line. If your local business is online only, leave plenty of time for shipping! And most importantly, remember, it's the thought that counts, so don't worry if your gift wrapping skills are more "festive mess" than "Pinterest-worthy."
3. Get Your Bake On!
Christmas is the perfect time to indulge in delicious treats. Whip up some homemade cookies, gingerbread houses, or a traditional fruitcake (if you dare);my favourite is a "Free Range Fruitcake" by Alton Brown. Don't worry if your baking skills are a bit rusty - just blame it on Santa's elves and embrace the imperfections.
4. Spread Some Holiday Cheer
Christmas is all about giving, so why not spread some joy to those in need? Donate to a local charity, volunteer at a soup kitchen, or simply perform random acts of kindness. Remember, even the smallest of gestures can make a big difference.
5. Watch All the Christmas Movies
Snuggle up on the couch with a cozy blanket and binge-watch all your favourite Christmas movies. From classics like "Home Alone" and "It's a Wonderful Life" to cheesy Hallmark rom-coms (my husband records it for me and he even watches with me... That is a sign of true love!), there's something for everyone. Bonus points if you can recite every line of "Elf"!
6. Embrace the Ugly Christmas Sweater
Ugly Christmas sweaters are a holiday tradition that should never be taken too seriously. Find the most outrageous, tacky sweater you can and wear it with pride. I try to find these second hand to be more "green". Extra points if it lights up or plays a festive tune!
7. Don't Forget the Music
No Christmas celebration is complete without a festive playlist. Blast those holiday tunes and sing along at the top of your lungs. Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is a must, of course; but truth be told, I am one for a good choir.
8. Plan a Virtual Christmas Party
In these unusual times, gathering with loved ones may not be possible. But that doesn't mean you can't have a jolly good time! Plan a virtual Christmas party with games, quizzes, and plenty of laughter. Who says you can't wear a Santa hat on a Zoom call?
9. Treat Yourself
Amidst all the hustle and bustle, don't forget to take care of yourself. Treat yourself to a relaxing bubble bath, indulge in your favourite holiday treats, or simply take a moment to appreciate the magic of the season. You deserve it!
10. Enjoy the Magic of Christmas
Above all, remember to enjoy the magic of Christmas. It's a time for love, joy, and creating beautiful memories. So snuggle up by the fireplace, sip on some eggnog, and let the holiday spirit fill your heart.
Now that you're armed with these festive tips, go forth and make this Christmas the best one yet. Whether you're a Christmas fanatic (guilty . . . ask my family) or a holiday newbie, there's something for everyone to enjoy. So put on your Santa hat, crank up the holiday tunes, and get ready for a holly jolly Christmas!
Artfully yours,
Michelle
